The door knock is 'the moment'. It is the time we prepare for. Knocking on someone's door for a door to door sales person is the equivalent of the bell chiming for round one to a boxer

We are going to look at ways to maximize your sales opportunities with every person you meet. We will see the importance of being prepared before we knock. Let’s share some tips that give you the best chance of success.

Do not fall into the trap of launching into a mini presentation on the doorstep, these tend to last two minuets and they also almost always end with a, no thanks.

Be observant on the way to people’s front door. Their house will tell you something about who lives there before you knock on the door. It can also give you points of interest to talk to them about.

How do you knock on someone’s door correctly? Do you knock forcefully or gently? I’m sure you’re relived to know that there have been much research done on how to knock on someone’s door and we are going to spend the next two hours discussing their findings…. I’m joking!

Come on, I'm sure you don’t need us to tell you how to knock on some ones door. Somewhere between a bailiff and the Avon lady should do it.

Have some empathy, we need to spare some thought to the customer and their state of mind. What could they have been doing before we knock on the door? What could be happening in their lives at that exact moment?

Because you have no idea what they may have been doing just before you knocked on their door, you have to be prepared for some strange reactions to you. You will need to make some allowances.

The other part of the equation is the hundreds of other people who have already knocked on their doors. Utilities, Jehovah‘s Witnesses, charities, double glazing sales people, Avon etc. Most of these drone out a sales pitch, the same one for each door they knock at.

Our customers have heard it all before. With that kind of competition you will need to stand out from the crowd. What you say will have to be original; your responses will have to be unique. You will need to be able to break their patterns.

It must be attention grabbing and interesting, it needs to say your are not just doing the rounds, you need to speak to them urgently today or they could miss out.

Importantly, it needs to be right for you and fit into the way you are feeling and feel natural to you. If there was a single pitch that worked every time we would write it out and get everyone saying it parrot fashion, but there is not.

You need to develop a few introductions that work for you and change them and use different ones through out the day. Here are some pointers on coming up with amazing door introductions

  • Be happy and friendly
  • Expect the no, but don’t notice it
  • Make your opening urgent, that you have a reason to be there
  • Be different and original
  • Be polite but firm
  • Ask questions as soon as possible and listen to them
  • Laugh with them
  • Do not be a pushy salesman
  • Stand out from the crowd
