What has gone so badly wrong with our sales industry today?

Great news! People in the UK absolutely love spending money!

Shopping has become a pastime in its own right. We go out happily to spend all of our cash and when that’s gone we get credit cards, then overdrafts, loans and store cards.

Look at some of the facts:

  • 80% of Britons regularly overspend to cheer themselves up when they are feeling low
  • Total consumer debt is £213 billion and is increasing by 1 million every four minutes
  • The average household debt in the UK is £8,816 (excluding mortgages)
  • There are 8 million more credit cards that there are people in this Country
  • More of us (49%) are saving up for a holiday, but only 46% of us save for our retirement
  • 12 million of us admit to going into debt for a holiday
  • 12.4 million of us do no financial planning whatsoever
  • 25% of us have no idea how much we spend every week
  • Only 51% of us know our credit card balances
  • One third of all the food we will buy today will be thrown in the bin next week
  • 52% of us could only survive financially for 17 days if we experienced a sudden loss of income

So, against this financial spending frenzy the most popular job you could have in the UK must be the humble sales person! He is the ultimate facilitator!

Nothing could be further from the truth! Sales people are always in the top three least favorite jobs in the UK, usually just behind the traffic warden. They are dreaded and despised in equal measure.

They are one of the few industries to have an insult named after them, salesy (salesy; talks a lot, untrustworthy has a hidden agenda) You can’t say someone is a bit traffic wardeny can you?

This makes the sales industry the most mismanaged industry of all time. With sales people pressurized to sell at all costs, hard closing techniques employed and very little regard for compliance and truth, it’s no wonder the sales person is unpopular.
